Cooperation with academia

The Federal Office for Civil Protection (FOCP) is tasked, among other things, with handling issues related to risk and vulnerability analysis. In dealing with specific socioscientific, security-policy, and risk-relevant issues, the FOCP works closely together with academic institutions active in the subject areas concerned. This includes monitoring and reporting on national and international developments in the areas of crisis management, risk and vulnerability analysis, and documentation of the most salient facts and developments.

Close cooperation with ETH

The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich has been involved for several years in security policy research with a focus on risk analysis and critical infrastructure protection, based on its work as the coordination point for the Crisis and Risk Network (CRN) and its New Risks research group. The Laboratory for Safety Analysis (LSA) at ETH Zurich has many years of experience in the analysis of safety issues in large technical systems in the areas of energy, communication, and traffic, as well as in the development of methods and models in these fields.
