Fed. Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF

Snow and Avalanche Research

The main task of the Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is to study the properties of snow and snow cover, as well as avalanche formation and avalanche protection. Its research, development and service provision in these areas are aimed at improving and upgrading protective measures, as well as adapting them to current circumstances.

Warning and instructions

As a centre of expertise, the SLF is responsible for warning the authorities and issuing the population with generally applicable recommendations on what to do in the event of an avalanche risk. One of best known services provided by the Institute is its avalanche bulletin.
